Drawdown types & the pre-purchase checklist

Two challenges at the same price can have wildly different difficulty — and most of that difference hides in the drawdown rule and the fine print. Here's how to read both before you spend a cent.

1. The drawdown types explained

The drawdown is the lowest your account is allowed to fall before the firm closes it. The type decides how that floor behaves:

Static (absolute) drawdown

A fixed floor based on your starting balance that never moves. Buy a $100k account with a 10% static drawdown and your floor is $90k — forever, no matter how high your balance climbs. The most forgiving and beginner-friendly model.

Trailing drawdown (end-of-day)

The floor rises with your closing balance each day, locking in gains overnight. More demanding than static, but manageable because it only updates once a day.

Trailing drawdown (intraday / peak equity)

The strictest type: the floor follows your highest equity during the day, including unrealised profit on open trades. A great morning can drag your bust level up to just below your current balance, leaving almost no room to give back. Common at some futures firms — respect it.

📉

Why it matters: a $100k account with an intraday trailing drawdown can be harder than a $50k account with a static one. Always read which type you're buying — the headline price tells you nothing about the real difficulty.

2. How drawdown is measured: balance vs equity

A second detail that trips people up: is the limit measured on balance (only closed trades count) or equity (open floating losses count too)? An equity-based limit can stop you out on an open drawdown that would have recovered. If you let trades breathe, favour a balance-based rule.

3. The pre-purchase checklist

Before you click buy on any challenge, confirm every one of these against your own strategy:

The 8-point pre-buy checklist

  1. Drawdown type — static, end-of-day trailing, or intraday trailing?
  2. Drawdown basis — measured on balance or equity?
  3. Daily loss limit — and is it measured from the day's open or your peak?
  4. Can you hold over the weekend if your strategy needs to?
  5. Are EAs / automation allowed for how you trade?
  6. Is news trading restricted on your instruments?
  7. Minimum trading days & any consistency rule?
  8. Payout schedule, first-payout wait, and profit split?

4. Weekend holding

If you swing-trade or hold positions across Friday's close, this is make-or-break. Many forex firms allow weekend holding on standard accounts but not on cheaper "swing-off" variants; most futures firms require you to be flat by session close. Buying the wrong account type here can fail you on a rule you didn't know existed.

5. EAs & automation

If you run an Expert Advisor or any automation, check the firm's policy specifically. The common pattern: your own EAs are allowed, but fully-passive copy trading, latency arbitrage and HFT exploits are banned because they profit from the firm's simulated pricing rather than genuine skill. Semi-automated tools (alerts, partial-close bots) are usually fine. When in doubt, ask support in writing before you buy.

6. News trading

Trading high-impact news (NFP, CPI, central-bank decisions) is restricted on many accounts — sometimes a full ban on holding through the event, sometimes just a no-new-trades window. If your edge is news-based, this single rule should decide your firm.

FAQ

Which drawdown type is best for beginners?

A static or end-of-day balance-based drawdown is the most forgiving and the easiest to track. Avoid intraday trailing drawdowns until you've mastered the mechanic on a demo.

Can I hold trades over the weekend?

It depends entirely on the firm and account type. Some forex firms allow it; many futures firms require you to be flat by session close. Always check before you buy if your strategy holds positions.

Are EAs and automated trading allowed?

Many firms allow Expert Advisors and semi-automation within limits, but ban fully-passive copy trading, latency arbitrage and HFT exploits. Check the specific firm's automation policy — it varies a lot.
